Other natural oils that are healthy for your skin

There are natural oils that can be used for moisturizing your skin but many also have healing properties that are beneficial as well. In many cases these natural oils can help with a variety of ailments,; from treating acne to healing wounds, as well as having properties that assist with anti-aging and more.

Most of the oils below are also very healthy when taken internally, and have very useful properties for cooking or adding to meals, but the focus of this page is on the skin health promoting

I live in a cold climate, and my skin gets dry in the winter.  In addition to sesame oil on general on my skin, I use coconut oil where my skin is especially dry, and I like to use olive oil in my hair.

When I travel to a sun destination, I always carry coconut oil with me.  It is great for skin that has been dried out from sun, sand, and salt.

 

Olive Oil

You may think of using olive oil as a great way to prepare pasta, but it also has properties that are helpful for protecting you against skin cancer, particularly melanoma.

Olives and olive oil contain antioxidants which help the body’s defenses fight against free radicals. Healthy cells are damaged by free radicals, and they can cause the formation of tumors. Also olive oil can help protect against premature aging as it assists with restoring collagen to the skin which gives it a more youthful appearance.

Some other skin problems that olive oil can remedy include stretch marks through regularly massaging it on the affected areas and smooth it onto chapped lips to heal them, this is especially effective when used overnight.  You can also apply it to nails making them stronger and healthier.

Coconut Oil

This oil has many uses for health and the fact that it helps your skin is no exception. Coconut oil has anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral properties. It can be used to protect as a sunscreen, also it limits the amount of microbes on the skin. It fights infections and alleviate dermatitis, psoriasis and eczema. Coconut oil can also cure acne by killing the bacteria that causes these skin conditions.

Also it can heal wounds and scars from pimples, plus remove excessive dead skin cells that make your skin flaky and rough. It can help strengthen underlying tissues as well.

 

Palm Oil

Palm oil, which has been regarded as a sacred healing food by civilization for thousands of years, is another oil that is used on the skin due to it’s anti-aging properties. Palm oil contains Vitamin E and helps fight free radicals that cause damage to the skin and cause wrinkles as well as fine lines. It also can stop them from occurring in the first place.

The oil also contains what’s called a refatting agent which helps restore moisture to the skin that’s stripped away by many soaps and detergents. It’s anti-bacterial so it kills germs on cuts and scrapes on the skin.

 

Sunflower Oil

This oil also has anti-aging properties and can be used under the eyes to reduce wrinkles. It has Vitamin E which helps restore elastin in the skin. Using sunflower oil several times weekly on your skin when its warm and damp can help postpone aging. It also has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits since it is high in Omega-6 fatty acids along with Vitamins A, C, D and E. Sunflower oil can also reduce toughness and redness of skin.

Sunflower oil has emollient properties, and can help skin to retain moisture since it has a high Vitamin E content. Beta-carotene which is another important ingredient in sunflower oil, that can be converted into Vitamin A, has antioxidant properties that help to protect skin against sunburn.

 

Safflower Oil

This oil can actually help prevent acne. Safflower oil contains linoleic acid which has properties that help pull excess dirt and oil from the skin. It also locks in moisture and lubricates since it keeps water from evaporating from the skin.

Since it is rich in linoleic acid, which carries Vitamins A, D, E and K, it helps maintain skin cell membrane health. The properties of safflower oil help to treat skin damage and reduce inflammation. Scars and wounds can be healed quickly by applying safflower oil to the affected areas.

Safflower oil can be used to treat acne since it has anti-bacterial as well as exfoliating qualities. This means that not only does it get rid of blemishes, it can help to keep them from returning and clears scars and spots from old acne eruptions.

 

Avocado Oil

This oil is a popular facial moisturizer since it deeply penetrates the skin. When applied it reaches down into the epidermis layer and actually repairs the skin by adding moisture, but doesn’t leave an oily residue. It can help plump out the skin and fill out fine lines and wrinkles, plus helps nourish dehydrated skin and reduce signs of aging.

Also it has been known to increase collagen to the skin when used regularly. This means more resilient, thicker, healthier skin and faster healing of wounds.

Avocado oil contains Vitamins B, C, D, E and K as well A which helps with creating new skin cells in addition to potassium and lecithin. It also has a high sterolin content, which are compounds that are anti-inflammatory. This means they help rid the skin of inflammatory problems like acne and eczema. It can also be used as a dry scalp treatment by using it in place of conditioner.

 

After you have been using sesame oil for a while and are aware of its benefits, I highly recommend trying out one or more of the oils listed above.  Some may have different effects on the health and beauty of your skin.

Olive Oil

A very popular oil for cooking, olive oil taken internally offers many health benefits. It actually contains a healthy fat that can help lower the cholesterol level in your blood which can help prevent heart disease. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reports that taking 2 tablespoons of olive oil a day can help to reduce your risk of heart disease. It contains antioxidants as well that can help combat illness.

Olive oil can be used for effective relief of constipation and is safer than over the counter remedies which can cause cramping. This oil also helps with easing digestion, stimulates metabolism, lubricates mucous membranes and can help prevent stomach ulcers. Consume it to stop flatulence, upset stomach and heartburn. Extra virgin olive oil is recommended as it is the least processed and contains more of the wholesome nutrients.

 

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has been vilified for many years in Western society since it has a high level of saturated fat. But due to its high amount of lauric acid (50%) it actually helps such ailments as high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Weight loss is another benefit that can be derived from coconut oil since the fatty acids it contains actually help to speed up your body’s metabolism. This accelerates the rate at which you burn energy. This may come as a surprise since it’s a saturated fat, but it is what’s called a medium-chain fatty acid which doesn’t have a negative effect on your heart. It also is transformed into energy easily through the liver, which means its less likely to be stored as fat.

The aromatic scent and slightly sweet taste of coconut oil is great for cooking and offers many benefits when consumed. It’s a great daily energy booster, also coconut oil helps with increasing immune functions, helps manage diabetes, has the potential of treating Alzheimer’s disease, and improves digestion. You can also use coconut oil for dental health since it can prevent as well as reverse cavity and tooth decay.

 

Sesame Oil

The oil is used in salad dressing and sometimes in place of olive oil for cooking but has many properties that stimulate good health as well.

Sesame oil contains antioxidants that help counteract conditions like heart attacks and arthritis. Safflower oil has been known to alleviate the symptoms of high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes. It also contains Omega-3 fatty acids which helps the body burn fat more efficiently. These fatty acids also work to boost the immune system and balance blood pressure.

 

Avocado Oil

There are powerful antioxidant properties in avocado oil due to the presence of Vitamin E, Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. This combination allows the oil to be a defense against ailments such as the growth of tumors in colon and breast cancer. In can also aid in preventing skin and prostate cancer.

This oil can also help protect your blood vessels by removing free radicals and cholesterol deposits. This helps to keep your blood vessels clear and flexible to be able to handle changes in blood pressure.

Avocado oil also contains oleic acid which increases the amount of good cholesterol in the body when consumed, so it reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease. When used in cooking it helps to manage glucose levels so it helps against the development of diabetes.
